Realistic meets quirky

I'm totally digging these not so ordinary cushions and prints from Jaime Mitchell Illustration. They are the perfect about of humor and eye catching, I mean come on a winking bear and a hipster polar bear, how can you not love it? He has such a realistic technique for the animals, they look as if the fur is waving in the wind. You can find the cushions over at Ohh deer as well as prints and iphone skins over at Society 6.

Valentines Card DIY

I've been a crafting machine as of late and have the paint and glue covered fingers to prove. Thanks to Pinterest I have been flooded with insane amounts of beautiful craftery {that's a word, right?} and after saying I can do that a few too many times I'm now actually doing it.

With Valentines day less then a week away I figured I better get moving if I was to send anything to my dearies and came up with a somewhat quick embroidered card. I'm a total beginner when it comes to embroidery so it did take me one try before to get it right, but once you get the drawing right, its smooth sailing...unless you are like me and don't pay attention to the tread, had to deal with not 1 but 2 not so nice knots.

To make an embroidered heart I used graph paper to lay out the stitches. I'll admit, I winged it since I've never actually tried this before but after a few attempts was pretty happy with this shape. After you figure out the shape you want, use a needle to punch a hole on each of the points.

I started off at the bottom and worked my way up from the bottom left corner to the top right of each box. That is until about half way, I somehow switched it but whatev's it still worked out perfectly. On the backside it looked pretty clean but I decided to add a piece of gray paper to cover the stitching since I had 3 nice knots. Even with the few attempts before hand, this is a rather quick craft even for those who haven't picked up a needle and thread. Promise.

With love day less then a week away I've been perusing fun and creative ways to have fun with food and decor and these chocolate shot glasses are simply fab. Crafted by the genius that is Spabettie, these Valentines spicy hot shots are not only vegan, they've got a hidden kick. I never even imagined you could use those ice molds for chocolate, guess I'm going to have to add molds to my wish list of fun do dads for the kitchen.

I am always a fan of the slightly unusual and these hand crafted and hand polished concrete pieces from Dr Craze sure are fun to look at. It may not be the most go to material in the jewelry making world but these are brilliantly crafted mixing beautiful colors and fun shapes, so why not concrete? Back in college I wanted so badly to live in a loft with concrete floors and countertops so why not wear it around my neck? Makes sense. I just love how the cloud makes it seem so delicate and gentile, I wonder how heavy these babies are.

Paper Pastries

For some reason I always end up needing a card for gift giving at the last minute and 9 times out of 10 end up making it myself. Don't get me wrong, I love making pretty much anything but envelopes get me every single time. I always end up wasting paper from incorrect folds and most of the time I just end up smashing a few strips of washi tape to hid the awkward corners and miss matched edges. So its only natural that this envelope template would be the perfect crafting essential to add to my arsenal of gadgets and do dads. I've always been a fan of Paper Pastries since the first time I saw them at Unique LA many moons ago, if you haven't stopped by their shop you simply must, its a crafters dream. Pencils, stamps, stationery and tapes fill this shop for those who crave the DIY. Now if only the large was still in stock....

One crafty Mom

This seriously creative {and time consuming} DIY project may be one of the best ideas I've seen yet when it comes to doodling. Jen of A thousand words took her son's drawings and with a little computer manipulation and some serious patients created a truly one of a kind bed duvet. I know a few little artists in my family that would love something like this....and just like that, another project idea is born.

Hollie Chastain

Happy first of February friends. Throughout the last few weeks I have been creating up a storm and bouncing ideas off everyone I talk to. Over the weekend the husband and I designed a patchwork of sorts blanket that I am now in the process of knitting... after figuring out how fast I am its going to take me at least 2 months! Hopefully I stick to it and actually finish, I don't know about you but I tend to never finish projects I start. And in true to me fashion, I've already got my next project on deck, a collage project for our heirloom seed container.
I love the look that a collage gives, not to mention its a great way to clear out your extra bits of paper, fabric and odds and ends. I came across these prints and cards from Tennessee artist Hollie Chastain and now the ideas are really flowing! I absolutely love how she creates her images mixing papers and pigment, its a very precise way to get in tiny detail. You can find Hollie's portfolio here as well as her Etsy shop here. Now to finish up the projects I've got going so I can start a new collage!

Crafting for fun

I've finally gotten around to organizing all of my crafting supplies and while getting everything clean and tidy I decided to whip up a few yarn name tags for future gift giving. I always try to come up with fun packaging and figured these would look great with a little ribbon on solid paper. They are super easy to make all you need is floral wire and yarn. It takes a little bit of time so put on your favorite tv show and get wrapping. These are quite fun to make and the possibilities for shaping are endless.

I've been wanting to throw a little get together with friends for a while now and after seeing these fun decor pieces from Bhldn I'm really aching to plan something! Though this site caters to the wedding planning crowd, the decor pieces are not only good looking enough for everyday use, they are pretty wallet friendly. Its all in the details and you can find everything from hanging ornaments and candelabras to place cards and pin wheels, there are tons of fun party ideas.

Make this, Chocolate cherry cookies

Do you have favorite flavor combinations? For me it has always been peanut butter and chocolate as well as cherry and chocolate...but really, anything with chocolate makes a fan out of me, and these cookies over at the Curvy Carrot have got me wanting to bake like crazy. A shortbread cookie sweetened with cherries and a chocolate kiss in the center, how can it go wrong? Though this recipe isn't specifically vegan, its easily adjustable, plus they are perfect for next month's love day.

Miniature lives

Don't you just love when something reminds you of another thing, which reminded you of yet another item? Confused? Let me explain. I came across these intricately awesome guerrilla gardening images thanks to the great minds over at Craft and fell in love immediately. I mean, flowers in an urban setting and miniature bits and pieces to go with it? Genius. The husband and I always dreamed of planning our own shenanigans throughout city streets, now I want to give it a whirl even more! And speaking of miniature, the pothole gardener with its small scenarios reminded me of artist Lisa Swerling's Glass Cathedrals. Each piece is its own little world and definitely tells its own story. My favorite, The world is a scary place, but I have armbands. These are so fun to stare at in person, its easy to get lost in miniature land.

Which led me to the final mini-movement, Marwencol. A while back the husband Netflix'd the movie, it was quite interesting to see what goes on in the mind of the creator. Each army soldier has its own back story filled with bloody battles, love tales and heart break. I would highly recommend checking out the movie. So, do you like things in the mini?

Planting things

I've finally started to plant all my random succulents, air plants and ferns and its got me wanting another terrarium oh so bad. Not like I need it but that is completely besides the point. Have you ever tried growing small plants indoors? It can be a bit more tricky then growing outdoors but if you find the right plant for your home it will bloom forever. Now that we are in SF where its almost always humid and cold I am having huge success growing succulents indoors but my ferns aren't too happy. If you've never tried might I recommend trying out a few air plants... they only need a spritz every so often so even if you forget they will still be your friend.

Pretty polish

I've been trying to rid our house of unnecessary toxins and one thing I was lacking on clearing out was my beauty regime. Thankfully with a cousin in the hair and cosmetic biz I'm now using vegan hair care products and makeup. And my hair and skin has never looked healthier. Vegan or not, we could all benefit from less chemicals leaching into our skin on a daily basis but often overlook our common products. And when I came across Zoya, a vegan nail polish I bookmarked it for all my future nail needs right away. The line is brilliantly colored with collections that will make your head spin. Its so nice to be able to have a slue of goodies to choose from, I think my favorite collection is wonderful, I'm a bit of a dark pigment kind of gal. I am loving these sketch like illustrations from Pennsylvanian artist Abby Diamond, this yellow and grey would be absolutly perfect in my muted colored bedroom. It seems to be the one space my husband and I can't seem to agree on how to decorate so it has remained rather plain with nothing on the wall and for some reason a million tables. I've been dying to try out rose water and petals in food ever since I tasted a rose cupcake and judging by this drink, I may have found the perfect recipe to try it out. Every once and I while I like to indulge in a glass of bubbly and who doesn't love Prosecco? As a bit of a new year resolution I'm trying to keep more flowers around to make things just a little bit nicer and from the looks of it, its time for a few new bouquets. Though I do rather like the curled and browned edges. Have you decided to try anything new this year? I've done pretty good at keeping up with my good ol' standby goal to shed a few extra pounds and have somehow managed to get 10-15 miles of walking in every week! Thankfully I'm 22 pounds down and drowning in my jeans, yay! I've got big plans for this year but first, I'm stopping to smell the roses. How about you?

I've been on a knitting streak lately for the gift giving season and now that its over I figured I'd start a little something for myself. After organizing my yarn and making it look a little less like a giant rats nest, it got me in the knitting mood and considering its still brrrr cold around here a scarf seemed to be the logical choice. Just hope it doesn't take me forever, I'm always so bad at starting projects and then walking away from them! And speaking of bad at starting and finishing, as of last night I am also in the process of making little cozies for our seedlings {they are in tin cans in the window sill}. Knitted goods are everywhere around here, thought I would share a few of my favorites I've seen here and there....

And of course knits aren't just limited to our clothing, there are fantastic tutorials out there on how to use old knitted sweaters to make fancy goodies for the home. A knitting basket made from a knitted sweater, love it! And that blanket has me considering making another giant blanket for the bed. I've made patch like knitted blankets before and have been looking for a big project....

Delicate ceramics

One of my goals this year is to have more and more fresh florals around the house to lighten things up and these ceramic vessels from Romi Ceramics would make for a great tabletop addition. Though I have quite a few vases already you can never have too many, am I right? I love the shape and muted colors used, they are a bit on the modern side but throw in a few calla lilies and I bet they would take on a fantastically traditional look. Have you made any new years goals?

I just love putting together fun packaging and these sewn beauties are a simple and creative way to add a little something to plain ol kraft paper. Luckily a straight line is about all I can do on a sewing machine so I might just give this a try next time its present giving time. Besides, the outside of a gift should be just as fun as the inside.

Make this, sweet potato ravioli

Over the weekend the husband and I did a lot with food; talking about it...researching it...growing it...eating it. Spending time in our garden is starting pay off as we were able to harvest our first crop of dino kale and mustard greens. It feels so good to be able to grow your own food, if you have the space I would highly recommend it, even if its just a small pot in a window. As I was pursuing pinterest, the husband practically yelled for me to stop scrolling and go back to this ravioli dish and boy am I glad he decided to look over my shoulder at that exact moment as I would have missed these babies from Petite Kitchenesse. Sweet potato, coconut milk and roasted chili ravioli. Wowza right? They are sort of all I can think about now, I just have to grab a few more ingredients but you can bet I am going to give these tasty bits a whirl. Happy Weekend

Happy Friday friends. As the first week of the new year comes to a close, I've been thinking of all the things I always say I'm going to do but never actually follow through with and one of those items on the top of the list is sending out mail. I always set the goal of sending good ol snail mail and each and every year the months go by and my stationery collection is still busting at the seems. So this year, I'm doing it. For real. As presents this past Christmas, I gifted my younger cousins with their very own pen pal sets and I'm thinking I might just join them in all the fun. These beauties from Quill and Fox would make for a fantastic gift in the mail don't you think? You know me and my love for all things terrarium and this post card set is just too fun...and they are perfect for framing!

Adult friendly kiddie spaces

When you think of children's rooms you very rarely end up with a minimal look in mind but these spaces created by Lily Z Design mixes the perfect amount of color and function that would work for anyone, adults included. It seems many new parents are struggling giving up their adult spaces for those brightly colored plastic toys and themed everything, but not here. I love the use of natural woods and color schemes that don't give you a head ache, just because you have little ones running around doesn't mean you need to give up your style! I am also a huge fan of hanging partitions, it not only creates additional space within a room but it also gives you a way to close of a bit of space if you don't want to see the clutter. A win win in my book!

Mapped out

Now that most people are walking around with their own gps devices in their pockets maps have become a bit of a thing of the past, unless you are an artist. More and more creatives out there are beginning to use discarded maps as a medium and the results can be amazing. After seeing this DIY embroidered piece from good ol Martha its got me on the hunt for the perfect map of my own to start creating.
These works from artist Matthew Cusick are simply stunning don't you think? Using a combination of inlaid maps, ink and acrylics, he turns regular panels into one of a kind art pieces with impeccable detailing. Though I love those 3 dimensional roadways, his Geronimo is quite incredible and amazingly recognizable!

Happy 2012

Happy new year friends, hope you all had a nice and relaxing weekend while ringing in a brand new year. Though we planned to go out, the husband and I ended up falling asleep on the couch and woke up just in time to watch the ball drop and then go to bed. Though we made up for it the following night by going on an 'adventure' and walked around the city...5 miles to be exact! The rest of the days were spent with the dog in the park and digging in dirt at our garden, and if you follow me on twitter you may have heard of our peculiar thefts too. Woke up to 1 hubcap missing on the car new years day and when we went to the garden discovered entire plants had vanished. Completely gone! A little digging proved a giant gopher hole under our veggie bed, seems a little critter had the munchies for some red cabbage, stole 3 entire plants!
And with the weekend spent in nature, I thought I would continue it along with these amazing photographs from Qi Wei, a brilliant artist out of Singapore. I've always had a love for nature photography, there are always details you miss in real life, but have never tried deconstructing my focal point. Don't you just love these? You can find his entire exploded flower collection here and can purchase prints here as well as read a great interview with the artist and his artistic process. I just love his philosophies behind photography and how it has a beginning and end and I too agree, a photo isn't a true photo till its printed out.

Kids have the coolest stuff

This year I tried my hardest to have my holiday gifts come from a handmade place but boy is it hard making everything by hand! Thankfully Etsy is filled with amazingly talented creators that have made a typical children's toy a thing of the past. I'm totally loving all these unconventional toys, a little whimsical a little weird but totally adorable.

Morning colors

Yesterday the husband called me outside as he was leaving for work to look at the amazing sky and I couldn't believe the color. At about 7:10 the sky was alive with color and shape I just had to run into the house to grab the camera. Nature at its finest.

I lightened the above photo to show the church detail but the bottom is untouched! The sky looked like cotton candy with its pinks and blues.

United Thread paintings & illustrations

I have been so into muted tones lately I might have a bit of a problem. There is just something about the greyed out hues that are so soothing, it just calms the brain. And when I came across these beautiful nature inspired prints from United Thread, my eye balls did a little happy dance. Artist Michelle Morin has such a detailed eye, I simply love the textures and patterns she creates in her imaginary worlds. Might need to pick up a few of these lovelies, they would make for a lovely natural collection in any room. You can also see a little behind the scenes to Michelle's creative process here.

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday, mine was filled with family, food and lots of laughter. Of course there are always the fun gifts that go along and this year my husband surprised me with that fantastically fancy humming bird pouring jar from Studio Gu. One of the perks of him traveling for work is the amazingly unique gifts and knowing my love of all things quirky and delicate he always picks the best objects to add to my growing collections. After I opened the gift he couldn't wait to show me the store he got it from and wow, how he didn't walk out spending hundreds of dollars is beyond me. Do is located in London and is a shop filled with a brilliant collection of home goods and accessories from a range of designers. I just love Studio Gu's collection don't you? Might have to get myself a few companion pieces!

Colorful touches

I just love designed products that use ordinary objects in different ways and these beaded lights are quite fun don't you think? Dottir and Sonur, a husband and wife Icelandic due working out of Berlin have found a way to combine whimsy and color in a way that would work for any age in any space. Oh how I would love a few of these string lights above my desk! And how darling is that origami wallpaper and print? Though a room full of this paper might feel a little more like a kids room, one focal wall of this brightly colored pattern would make for a great focal point in any room. I've been on a paper kick lately and have a stack of origami paper, perhaps I should make a few cranes to hang around the house... you can never have too many fun crafts!

Make this, Holiday menu

Over the weekend the husband and I ventured out of SF to nearby Oakland in search of amazing vegan food and our favorite Souley Vegan was the goal. About 50% of the time they seem closed for one random reason or another and Sunday was that day. Totally bummed we drove almost 40 minutes to a closed restaurant, I remembered the tasty morsels from Flacos in Berkeley and we had a new goal, tacos. An hour later I had the most amazing lunch. Seriously, if you are in the area, stop on by, the food is incredible. So much in fact that it has inspired me for this years holiday dinner.
Each year my Mom and Aunt make a traditional Mexican dinner and this year I'm thinking of making my own vegan version. After devouring my pozole {a hominy soup with a chili base} from Flacos, I'm almost positive I can recreate the flavors. I came across this recipe from of all places, Earth Balance and am thinking it might be a great way to finish off our meal. I've always been a HUGE fan of Mexican sweet bread and if this is as easy as it looks you can bet it will be added to my baking rotation.
Are you making anything fancy or special for the holidays? We always have way too much food but there is just something about the winter that a few extra sweets just seems ok don't you think?

I've never rocked a sock and heel at the same time, but these laced duds from Tabio might just be fun enough to give the look a whirl. Totally girly, totally adorable, totally affordable. Plus a pair of these would be a perfect match for my newest shoe score, I have teeny tiny feet and found these babies in the kids section for a whopping $8. Sometimes its nice to be super small.

I've always been a fan of fun and quirky gifts and I am just loving these little guys from Greenwich letterpress. Filled with brilliant letterpress, you can also find a few not so normal gifts, like that Rosanne pencil set...Becky #1 and #2, love it! These pins are also a great way to bring in a little color and whimsy to any outfit, personally I think broaches and pins are going to make a big come back in the coming months, I'm already starting to see more and more trendy ladies sporting metal beauties.

Early morning

Over the weekend the husband and I decided to wake up super early and watch the lunar eclipse. At 5:45 AM I opened up the bedroom blinds and could see the moon nice and clear from the bed! It took us about 5 minutes to decide to drive on up to the highest point in our neighborhood to check it out and my goodness the view was breath taking. We stood up there for almost an hour (the poor dog gave up 40 mins in and demanded to be held it was that cold!), if you've never gotten up early to look up in the sky its a very surreal moment, especially if you live in a big city. And always being the ones to go against the crowd, while everyone was oohing and awing over the moon, we were fixed in the other direction watching the sun rise. Pretty, don't you think?

Getting crafty thanks to Pinterest

As most of you know Pinterest can be both your best friend and worst enemy. Got a few minutes to kill? Check out pinterest. Busy busy busy? Oh look pinterest...magically its one of those sites where you intend to just take a quick look and an hour later you realize you spent your entire break and then some just looking at beautiful photos. To remedy this feeling of wasting time I decided to actually start making, doing and wearing the ideas I am finding and when I came across this fun and pretty simple DIY for a chunky book from Memory makers magazine I knew I needed to give it a try. Its going to be a Christmas present so I can't quite share mine yet, but lets just say cork tiles and origami paper are making for a very fun book! Are you making any gifts this year?

I just love how creative folks are out there, they make the sky the limit when it comes to finding inspiration. I'm finally getting the hang of growing plants indoors {its very different from gardening people!} and actually have a few air plants already growing. Have you made anything you found online? Getting in the decorating spirit

I got in a crafting mood yesterday and took a break from the normal gift giving crafting and made myself a little something. Though I love to admire holiday decor, the husband and I have agreed to keep everything minimal and not necessarily scream a certain holiday, plus when you live in apartments storage can be your worst enemy. So I decided to grab left over fabric from my wedding {I seriously misjudged when buying and ended up with almost 4 yards of gold!} and a ball of yarn and started shredding. Simple flags tied by simple yarn in almost the same color as our walls makes for a lovely addition. Have you made anything for you home?

Found this vintage ornament at an antique fair here in San Francisco last year. Brought it home and the first thing my Aunt said, "I used to make those all the time" and then proceeded to show me how. Guess crafting runs in the family. Since we don't have a tree I threw a strand of lights into a clear cake dome and viola, a fun little display.

I took this one last night right after I hung it. Its blurry but I still love it, shows the flags and just the right amount of sparkle.

While going through all of my holiday inspiration I landed upon this gem from Style me pretty last year {I love digging through archives, there are so many great images out there} and just had to share. I simply love the idea of drawing a tree, I've had the idea of painting a tree on a giant canvas but have yet to actually make one. Its such a fun idea and perfect for those with tiny spaces. Shot by photographer Alison Conklin, this Kate Spade inspired holiday shoot is filled with great detail, who doesn't love a few glittered animals hanging out on their table top? And a dog in a tutu??? Adorbs. You can find tons of glittered goodness here- they even glittered a bike!

Make this, Holiday gift giving edition

My oh my this month is just flying by isn't it? I'm knee deep in crafting goodness and have started to make my baking lists for gift giving this year. As always, I only bake vegan {have been for years now} and each and every year I've made a goodie bag of sorts for my family, friends and even the husbands co-workers... 2 years ago I made over 20 individual treat boxes for my husband to carry into work, it was 2 full days of baking but hearing his office workers praise for all the delectable goodies was totally worth all the hard work. I always try to throw in a few unconventional items and this year these chocolate, pistachio and cranberry biscotti look absolutely fabulous don't you think? Are you making anything for the holiday's for gift giving? I find folks always love a good candy or cookie but those cakes in a jar might just find their way into a few stockings this year!

Small adventure

Every single time I see a buffalo I now think of my husband. He's been wanting to ink one of these giants onto his body for some time now and at first I was shocked; I mean, a buffalo? But over time they have grown on me and now I sort of can't wait for him to get it. I found this charming little guy over on Small Adventure and showed the husband right away, seems I'm more excited about the design of it then he is. I love artist Kekito Brodeur's style, very natural and minimal. You can also find a lovely collection of animals prints, holiday cards and adorable nature inspired jewelry in her shop.

Holiday inspiration part 1

Over the last few weeks I have been gathering image after image of holiday decor ideas for my Mom and I, this year we are changing everything up as far as decor and are attempting to make almost all of our Christmas decor. Thankfully we started in mid November! Its coming along great and we have a growing collection of lovely handmade items, they always feel way more special when you put it together with your own two hands. For today I thought I would share a few of the images I've been drawing inspiration from, seems I can't get enough natural elements this year... there is just something about having the smell of evergreens in the house that makes me all giddy.
It is so simple to bring the outdoors in, I may forgo a tree this year for something like that mantle of small potted plants. I love the idea of being able to keep the plants alive, who knows maybe I can even plant one somewhere in our growing garden. I've done the rosemary shrub before and walking into a home with rosemary is intense, the smell can get quite strong but is still lovely. And how pretty is that floating candle in the cranberries!? Such a simple way to bring in color, scent and lighting.

Keeping with the crafting theme, its important to get everyone excited, especially the kiddos. This year my entire family (we are a large crowd of 20+!) is going to craft our very own wreath and will be participating in a contest to guess the maker of each wreath. Should be very interesting we have some fun personalities in my family. These would be the perfect craft for the kids to get in on and would still fit in with our more sophisticated holiday decor.

And because nothing says holiday decor like baubles and ornaments, here are a few examples of how to embellish a bit of your decor. You can find super cheap bulbs everywhere and for the less then gorgeous ones (why is there always one color or design in a package that doesn't really belong?), glitter can be your best friend. My Mom decided she wanted to change all her colors from the typical red and green to a chic purple, gold and green palette, very beautiful and classic. Have you done anything to get in the holiday spirit yet?

I'm just loving these amazingly detailed tiles from Made a Mano they are somehow both traditional and modern, I wouldn't mind any of these gorgeous hand painted and silk screened tiles in my home. I think my favorite is this photo below of the collage of tiles, the color palette is perfect for my tastes and the different patterns are the perfect focal point don't you think? Tile is often over looked but if you ask me they are the perfect way to bring your personality and color into any space.

Make this, Chocolate chip cookies

I have been on the hunt for the perfect chocolate chip cookie and have come close a number of times...ok, so I would never turn down a cookie, but I want the most mouth watering cookie I can find and these tasty morsels from Angela of Oh she glows are amazing. Though I stopped at 5 tablespoons of butter instead of going the recommend 7 route, these were still a little on the greasy side so I would go with maybe 4 spoonfuls next time. These did however have the perfect crunch and stayed for 3 whole days in a closed container, my husband ate way more then he should have and had a lovely sugar rush at 10 pm so be sure to limit yourself! Get ready family and friends, tis the season for delectable baked goodies.

There is something striking about this Rising of the setting sun print from artist Wayne Pate that just draws me in, I can't help but stare. Using a silkscreening process, Wayne has a very unique eye for shape and color, oddly enough my favorite is black and white, colors that normally make me uneasy together. Do you have reactions to any colors or textures? For me, black and white together as well as red make me nervous and a bit anxious, but if done well apparently I love it. Make this, Vegan Thanksgiving

Around this time of year I always get asked what I can even eat for Thanksgiving and the answer is simple. Pretty much anything. Though I have been sick to my stomach the last two days, I'm finally better now- just in time to make 2 entire meals for tomorrow! With a big day of travel and two stops ahead, everything needs to be made in advance...I'm just glad I made the pie crust last week! So what's on the menu? We are starting off the day with a tofu scramble I like to throw together with whatever veggies are in the fridge and hash browns. Maybe a muffin or two. Then its on to a 2 and a half hour drive with a car filled with amazing scents. I will be making stuffing, steamed mashed cauliflower, a hippie loaf and gravy along with a pumpkin pie. All vegan!! Plus we will have baked yams and roasted veggies waiting upon our arrival {my Mom is the best}. I might just have to roll home after all that.

Architectural beauty

Over the weekend I was getting caught up on all my blog reading and came across these architectural gem over on design love fest, one of my favorite blogs for all things color and design. While this home in Fukawa, a suburb of Hiroshima, was designed for 4 people to call home, its architecture is simply stunning. Funny enough, when I was in college I had to take a 3D modeling class where we built scale models of homes and design elements. One of our assignments was to build shapes out of a box and wouldn't you know it mine looked exactly like this house. Well, it was more of a squared box, but the front door and window placement were exactly the same! And I even had overlapping floors like the interior of this home! What do you think of the design? Back then, my teacher- who wasn't the fondest of me- told me how bad it was, but looking at this home, my design looks like it would have worked. I just love the look of the interior with the sharp angles and use of natural woods. And that front door, swoon.

Now that fall is all around us I've noticed more and more natural elements and jeweled tones adorning tabletops and I simply love it don't you? Always a fan of using what is around you, these tablescapes would be perfect for any gathering. I've been a busy bee crafting away for winter decor, I know its super early but when you are making everything by hand you need to give yourself ample time. It took me a few times to figure that one out too, nothing worse then not being able to finish up your hard work in time. These are super simple ways to dress up your table, and the use of natural flowers and grasses is a great way of bringing fall indoors. And those painted cans, sort of a genius way to coordinate your color palette.

Make this, Pumpkin hummus

Now I've made hummus and I've made pumpkin but never in my wildest dreams thought to combine the two. And thanks to Erin of Naturally Ella its sort of all I can think about now. I made pumpkin for the first time this year and though it was not cooked all the way through, the flavor was fantastic. I've got a sweet blue pumpkin just waiting to get roasting, I wonder if it would have the same taste in this recipe. And for those of you that have never made your own hummus, guys, its super easy.

Urban gardeners

Over the weekend the husband and I became urban farmers. We missed having our hands in the dirt and reaping the benefits of growing your own food, and after a bit of research and a slew of phone calls, we came across our new home away from home, Brooks park. With incredible views, ample space and friendly gardeners we couldn't resist and got a few plots. Luckily they had a few plants already growing too! Of course the very next day we had planted starters and seeds of broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, spinach, swiss chard, kale, turnips and 3 different kinds of onions. Can't wait to see what grows, this climate is not only new to us but is completely unpredictable.

Happy November friends. Doesn't it seem like days are flying by? Before we know it Christmas will be right around the corner although this year I'm hoping to be at least a little more prepared. I started my holiday crafting yesterday and am now living with fabric flower petals just waiting for their final touches for the season. But before I get to December, good ol' Fall is still very present everywhere, from falling leaves to amazing and hearty looking veggies, there is just so much color everywhere! I just love this idea of using vegetables as a centerpiece for holiday gatherings... I have a basket about this size constantly filled with fruits and veggies so why not give it a 'theme' right? Turnips, carrots, red potatoes and radishes make up this beautiful display, plus, after its use as a centerpiece, you've got dinner. A win win.

Anyone have any great plans for the weekend? We've been having fantastic weather lately and though the ground may shake from time to time, October is pretty awesome in SF. I'm hoping to get in a picnic at the park with the husband and pooch, its one of our favorite things to do and when living right across the street from Golden Gate park, how could you not go on a sunny afternoon?
A few days ago I got an email from Coni of ConiLab all the way over in Spain to introduce me to her lovely handmade screenprinting shop and I just love this life is colorful print don't you? It reminds me to stop and take a deep breath and just look around me. There are so many things to get done in a day, sometimes a reminder to just take it all in and have a moment of relaxation is needed. So thanks Coni for helping me discover all the color around me.

Now that I am back to eating whole foods again I can't seem to get enough to fill my belly. Though my sweet tooth has seemed to shrink {I'm totally shocked!} it didn't stop me from drooling over all of these delectable cookies that just so happen to also be vegan. Its funny, when people find out I don't eat meat they just assume snacks are only raw veggies or dried fruit and well, yes, I do snack on veggies and fruit but I will always hold a special place in my heart and stomach for a sweet snack here and there, and don't these look fabulous? Baking is one of my all time favorite things to do, there is something about throwing ingredients into a bowl and then the oven without knowing if they will actually turn out that just gets me so excited. Plus nothing is better in my opinion then a warm cookie right from the oven. So with that, here are a few that have my drooling over my computer: Pumpkin gingerbread cookies, Samoas bars, Shortbread cookies, Mexican hot chocolate snickerdoodles.

A beautiful Fall wedding

Last week I was able to attend my adorable cousins wedding held at the Monte Verde Inn, a beautiful private estate for a perfect Fall wedding. After about an hour and a half into our 3 hour drive, I unfortunately realized my dress along with my husbands blazer were sitting nice and neat on my desk back at home so a quick stop to drop off the dog and a super fast shopping trip were of course in order!
But back to the lovely wedding, the bride and groom had a book theme that filled this wedding with charming details and scrumptious eats. With a beautiful wooded background, the couple shared their first kiss under a beautifully bloomed altar and chandelier. I just loved her color choice; the bridesmaids wore chocolate brown and carried vibrant orange blooms, and well, the details were incredible. Each guest was greeted with their own journal and library card! My crafty cousin and her Mom took to Facebook and got every single guests photo for their seating arraignments along with super subtle food indicators for the waiters- us vegans were feathers. Changing the usual bridesmaid bouquet, each bridesmaid carried their own book with a spray of floral goodness coming out of the center. Loved it! I just wish I could have partied it up a little more, it was the beginning of my bad tummy situation. Oh and I totally missed the dessert table that came out, but my husband got a few great photos of my Grandmother realizing what indeed a dessert table was. Lets just say, she left with many bags of candies, you go Grandma.

Feeling better, mostly

Boy its been a week. Every few months my stomach decides to rebel against me and knocks me off my feet but these last few days have been a doozy. Living with GERD is by far one of the most annoying things, one minute you are fine and the next, you can't keep anything down. And lets just face it, its hard for others to really understand a major 'tummy ache'. So for the last week and a half I have been living off of pretzels, hummus, toast and coconut water. I'm still not 100% but as long as I don't have to stand for more then 5 minutes I can tolerate the pain... which feels like someone is constantly sitting on my chest. Though I was in pain I did get to wake up to these loving faces filled with concern, my little Uli was by my side all week and my dear husband did a wonderful job trying to fill my empty stomach.
But oh how I have missed being here and reading all your amazing links and tid bits. I think I even went 2 entire days without even touching my computer, something I never do! So guys, what did I miss?

While I was catching up on one of my favorite design blogs, Decor8, I came across the amazingly colorful and beautifully patterned works from Nancy of Cozamia. And not only are her pieces pleasing to the eye but they are also friendly to your wallet! I just love this bird one titled Color migration, cream, the colors are so vibrant and life. You can find more of Nancy's collection at her site as well as keep up with her newest pieces over on her blog. I love that she mixes both digital and hand painted elements to create each piece, giving it that one of a kind feel.

Pal + Smith

Over the weekend I was asked what my personal design style was and it seems to be the hardest question for me to answer. Over the years it has sort of morphed from a very modern style to a bolder vintage look with a touch of modern. See, even that sounds weird. So while I try to figure out the exact style I want to call my own I thought I would take a peek at a few of my favorite spaces.
Let me introduce you to the fun and colorful world of Pal+Smith. This southern California based company has one spectacular portfolio and furniture line filled with traditional pieces with a modern flair. I just love this living room's bold pattern and color combinations, definitely a place I could live in.

Quick break for pie

Um, I think I need to bake a pie. I just stumbled across Family feedbag, a blog filled with made from scratch recipes for that down home cooking we all crave and this fall apple pie looks to die for! My husband has asked me why I still read blogs and watch shows that still incorporate meat in the dishes and plain and simple, everything can be adjusted and tweaked into an amazing vegetarian option. I've sort of made it my mission to supply our family with delicious and nutritious meals and have been finding amazing dishes to try out, plus, the waistline is thanking me. But back to this pie, yep, still feel like I need to make one.

There is something about these beautifully designed geometric's from Canadian artist Russell Leng that just lures me in. I absolutely adore New Nature Systems 3, its color is perfect for my home, might just have to pick it up for the bedroom. Luckily for us, a few of Russell's prints are available over at Little Paper Planes and Mammoth at very decent prices. I just love a good print at a wallet friendly price, makes it easier to pick up a few at a time!

I totally have a foodie blog crush for Sprinkle Bakes, a collection of the most amazing and almost all simple to make desserts you will see. Filled with color and a little whimsy, brilliant baker Heather Baird has not only given us drool worthy photography, she even includes recipes- and even though they seem out of this world difficult, Heather is known to throw in a few boxed cake mixes to make it that much easier. Although I strictly bake vegan in our kitchen, I am always tempted to try out new desserts with my own vegan twist... and you can bet I've added Heather's recipes to my 'to bake' folder. I've been noticing more and more calendars around these days and I think I might just have to jump on the bandwagon and pick up one or two for a colorful touch. My kitchen is stark white so a small bit of color would do wonders! There are so many options for our pocket books, from digital files to water colored beauties and delightful letterpress, you can find the right style of calendar for you at the right price point. Amazing details

I am not usually a fan of straight black and white; I think its the harsh contrast that starts to hurt my brain after a while, but these amazing drawings from artist Rachel Eardley are pretty fab. I love the style, very sketch like, but I think its the subject matter that stands out the most. I just love this window image, we all stare out our windows everyday but do we really take in all the detail? And those are some fierce drapes. Rachel's Polaroid collection is also a favorite, they remind me of Dear photograph with the additional images and 'extended scenes'. These wedding posters are so fun and playful, a perfect gift for a bride and groom don't you think? Created by Portland husband and wife team Maddy and Seth, Ello There is a shop filled with lovely prints, posters, invitations and save the dates, all with a little whimsy and charm. Weddings should be a fun time and I can't think of anything grander then a personalized watercolor painting depicting the special date. You can keep up to date on their goods over at the Ello there blog and do stop by Maddy's photography blog, that first set of photos with the little girl in the glasses made my morning.

Perhaps its the time of year but I am noticing muted colors everywhere and love every single minute of it! If I could have my way, my entire house would be decked out in these hues, but alas, I live with a boy and have gotten the "its starting to become a little too girly around here" talk one too many times. But a girl can still dream right? I blame it on our last place in Venice Beach where everything was dark heavy wood with dark blues, browns and beige. BLAH! Now I just want everything nice and bright, and for some reason, it means muted tones to me. Make this, Pumpkin edition

October always makes me think of all the yummy ways to use pumpkin in my cooking, and now that I am full force on trying new recipes, I thought I would find a few new ones to try this year in honor of the delectable gourd. I've done the traditional salted roasted seeds and of course pie, but why not a pumpkin and bean casserole? I never think savory when it comes to pumpkin, so this one might just have to be tested as soon as possible. Don't these caramelized seeds look divine!

I've also never tried pumpkin cookies, so these are definitely going into the baking rotation stat. I love baking and this time of year is perfect to try out tons of recipes on the family. I'm the only vegan {I only bake vegan} so its nice to introduce them to new flavors. And that pumpkin seed brittle down there is going to be made as soon as the first pumpkin is carved!

Hand pulled prints

Over the weekend I finally got a desk to set up my own office space, I've been balancing a laptop on a sofa as well as using my dining table to draft on and the floor to craft. Hopefully I can keep it organized enough to have enough space to do everything I need. And with that comes a few new fun pieces to spruce up the place, and this giraffe print from illustration artist Eleanor Grosch is right up my ally. I'm in a major orange phase right now. I just love this style of screen-printing, makes me wish the husband and I would actually pull ours out and get designing already. Love Mae

Its been a while since I wandered through the land of wall decals but when I cam across these gems over at Love Mae I knew they gone from plain to fantastic. Made of fabric and completely reusable, these adorable wall decals are perfect for any flat surface. You can peel, crumple, move, flatten and stick again. I love the idea of using fabric, the one and only decal I had was vinyl and while it looked great, reusing was out of the picture and it left a sticky film in some spots. But not these, Love Mae's decals pull off cleanly, are made with eco friendly inks and are non toxic. You can also find fantastic melamine dinnerware and wrapping papers available through Love Mae's shop or Etsy shop.

An idea

Its been a long weekend filled with trips to the pharmacy and lots and lots of cough medicine, but thankfully the husband and I are almost 100% back to normal. I've just got an annoying cough and stuffy nose. I was able to sit in on a few vegan cooking demos at the World Veg Festival yesterday that was luckily right down the street, and on my birthday! The husband even treated me to a special serving of pomegranate and dark chocolate soy ice cream, a gossip magazine and a lovely bunch of purple flowers {my favorite color}.

Anyway, it has been a while since I've been in the crafting mood and it seems this little illustration from Angela & Ithyle always turns it around for me, so I thought I would share. Sometimes you just have to sit back and let inspiration come to you, and I think this has worked its magic once more. I've got a slue of crafty projects waiting to be started/finished/drawn up, might as well start on something and see where it takes me.

Lovely colors

I came across Turkish artist Fatma Gultekin on Flickr and fell in love with her style of photography. I found this great interview of the lovely Fatma, describing her process and inspiration that goes into her images. Each shot has a vintage feel and the colors are incredible, no doubt thanks to expired film. Here I go again with my subdued color combos, what can I say at least I'm consistent with my color love. Makes me want to pull out my old film cameras and get snapping.

Julia Pott

After watching Here comes the waves by The Decemberists it got me wondering what's new in Ms. Pott's world. And she's been busy! I've mentioned the talented Julia Pott before, I've always liked her style of drawing and wit. Back in school I had board after board of scratchboard filled with lines and shapes just like these. Minus the adorable animals in knitwear. Stop by her shop before October 12th, she is making the leap from London to New York and all of her great prints won't be coming with her! Thinking I need to pick one up for our place, the husband is also a big fan- he even dreams of a Pott drawing as a tattoo, he's been talking about it forever and after showing him this he got that much more excited.

Make this, A berry green smoothie

Last week I had mentioned to my Mom that I wanted a blender to make my own smoothies for breakfasts and a few hours later I had my own new smoothie making machine. Thanks Mom. The husband and I have already put it to use mixing up a batch of fresh fruits and veggies we picked up. Here is what we used for a scruptious and healthy afternoon snack.

A berry green smoothie

8 strawberries

5 figs

1 banana

2 tbsp flax seed

3 big leaves swiss chard

large handful of spinach

1 tbsp honey

1/2 cup rice milk

We have also already tried mixing in yellow nectarines, ginger and kale, all just as yummy and healthy. I'm going to try to locate some acai and we have yet to mix in the red beets that looked too good to pass up. Smoothie making is just so creative!

I've always had a love for all things patchwork and have been known to throw an unsuspecting fabric into the mix for a patch, and these georgeous recycled pieces from Turkish artist Jo Supara Tarakci would be perfect in any room. I think these pink chairs are my favorite, they remind me of something you would see in Molly Ringwald's room circa 1986. Aili Schmeltz

I found L.A artists Aili Schmeltz over on 20x200 and just loved her style. Unfortunately for us, all but 2 are available at a nice $2000, but we can still look and enjoy right? They have such an interesting look with impeccable detailing, I just love that bright orange one, so vibrant with great patterns. Aili also produces wonderfully intricate sculptures, the Striped Hilltop is simply fabulous.

Changing seasons

Happy fall friends, this is my favorite time of the year I just love the colors and textures and smells we get to surround ourselves with. I don't normally decorate for the seasons around here since we have zero storage but I'm thinking this year of sprucing up the place with natural elements that can be tossed after a few weeks. There are so many ideas floating around I thought I would round up a few of my favorites to get inspired. And get ready dear husband, there will be glittered pumpkins this year.

Colorful collages

I've always love the look of collages, the idea of always creating a one of a kind piece just fascinated me. When I was little I would sit for hours with my Grandma at her kitchen table cutting out dolls and flowers from magazines and carefully pasting them into my own handmade book. I guess I have always been the crafty type. These collages from Indonesian artist Vantiani are not only fun and colorful they are also made with recycled materials, some even from discarded treat wrappers! They just have that whimsical feel don't you think?

Bye bye summer

Today is officially the last day of summer but I'm just not done with all the beautiful and colorful summer inspiration out there, how about you? Thankfully it went out with a bang around here, we finally got a few consecutive days of sunshine - something I'm learning does not happen often. Perhaps that is why I find myself drawn to the more washed out or greyed hues, I'm surrounded by it all the time. But just before fall gets here, a few more summery shots.

Terrarium love

I have always been a big fan of terrariums but have yet to get one for myself out, they always tend to be a little pricy considering everything you need to buy to get it going, but, these geometric gems from Score + Solder might be worth saving up just a little for. I'm really liking that tear drop shape, so unique. Each are handmade by artist Matthew Cleland who just happens to be a traveling gypsy.... a culture I am simply fascinated by!

Make this, Chocolate pie sticks

Don't you just love finding new recipes? I came across this recipe for chocolate pie sticks on food gawker, one of my go to's for mouth watering eats and knew I had to bookmark this baby right away. Made with pie crust and a few chocolate chips, its a super simple dessert idea that not only looks delicious but is totally portable. I'm thinking a stack of these guys with a thermos of coffee would be a perfect addition to our picnics in the park on a cool day. I would imagine the filling could be changed out easily too.
